VIBRIOSIS (Bacteria)

A number of different bacteria species are associated with shrimp. Some of these are pathogenic, some are epi-commensal are some may even be beneficial. Of the pathogenic types, some are intracellular and some are extra cellular. The intracellular types (e.g., rickettsia) are not particularly common, but can cause serious losses on some occasions. Of the extra cellular types, filamentous bacteria are usually epi-commensal and cause fouling. Of the extra cellular pathogenic types, Vibrio species like V. parabaemolyticus, V. harveyi and V.vulnificus, seem to be the most serious and mycobacterium types less frequently found. Although Vibrio species are the most commonly found bacteria in dying shrimp, they are common members o f the marine or brackish water community or the shrimp gut and often do no harm to healthy shrimp.
